FLEXIBILITY-TRAINING PRINCIPLES: HOW MUCH INTENSITY TO USE & HOW LONG TO STRETCH

How Much Intensity to Use
Proper stretching should take the form of slow, relaxed, controlled, and relatively pain-free movement. It is important to disregard the "no pain, no gain" mentality when you stretch since improvement occurs without undue pain. Joint pressure should produce only mild discomfort. Too much pain and discomfort is a sign you are overloading soft tissue and are at risk of injury. After experiencing mild discomfort with each stretch, relax the muscles being stretched before the next repetition. You will learn to judge each exercise by the stretch-and-feel method, easing off the push if pain becomes intense or increases as the phase progresses.
How long to Stretch
Depending on the stretching technique you choose, the length of your workout will be determined by the number of repetitions (ballistic stretching) and/or the length of time each repetition is held in the stretched position (static and PNF stretching). The amount of time the position is held should progress from 10 seconds at first to 30 seconds after two to three months of regular stretching. A 30- to 60-second stretch appears to only slightly increase the benefits and may be impractical.
If your main purpose for stretching is to prepare your body for vigorous exercise and to maintain the existing range of motion in the major joints, 6 to 9 minutes is sufficient time. For athletes and other individuals striving to increase their range of motion, 10 to 30 minutes of careful stretching may be necessary. Several different stretching exercises may be performed for each joint.
